Should You Stay Within Your Niche as a Blogger?

Should you stay in your niche as a blogger? This is a question I have often asked myself, but more so now I have other bloggers ask me. Niche is a hot topic it seems like currently in the blogging world. Is it okay to step out of your blogging niche? Should I just stick to the topics I blog about? These are the questions I see all over the blogging space.

Blogging is full of many queries and questions and I feel like there is always something new to learn. I also feel like I am constantly changing and advancing my strategy, which is a lesson on how fast new things appear and how fast things become irrelevant. I thought today for open discussion Saturday I’d share my thoughts, and share the results I have had from moving out of my niche into what I do currently.

Remember this is open discussion Saturday, so as always I want to hear your thoughts and your own experiences of this too. So once you have read the post, leave a comment!

ITS TOTALLY UP TO YOU

First and foremost, its 100% your choice what your niche is and whether you want to stay in your niche bubble or not. You have full creative freedom of your blog, if you want to change it up and try something new then you can do it. I think alot of the time it’s fear that stops alot of us. And we think nobody will read it, or nobody will comment or share it. But you don’t know until you try.

I know it’s easy to worry about changing your content or taking that risk. We are automatically programmed to think that things will go wrong, but what about if things go well? What if changing your niche or trying to at least is what you site needed?

CHANGING MY NICHE HELPED ME

As many of you already know my blogging story, I wont go into too much detail. But when I first started my blog in 2015 I was solely a beauty blog. I shared makeup looks, tips, hair products and makeup reviews. My engagement was low (compared to what it is now). I blogged for a year and a half and then took a 4 year break. I came back in July of 2020 and completely re-branded my blog into what it is today. I started sharing more content for a wider demographic.

For me it was important that my content was inclusive. Of course I see no issue in having a particular niche or a particular group you want to aim for, but I think its really restricting. When I just had a beauty focused blog my engagement was low and my readers were mainly female at the time. Opening up and broadening my content has really helped me to make sure my content is for everyone. And of course, when you cater for the masses it really helps to bring more people to your site.

What do you think? Do you change your niche frequently? Or do you stay within your niche?

Your niche is just that, your niche. As I said, it’s up to you whether you stay within the walls that you have created. But I’d love to hear your thoughts on this topic!

  1. I started my blog as a school assignment (although I had always wanted to have one). I am studying public health, so I planned to use it as a vehicle to share health information. I still like writing about health, but feel like I’m limiting myself and quite often my blogs are not really health related. So how much stock should I put in the name of the blog? My last name is Rich, so I like the play on words. And I’m a little concerned that readers who click on RichOnHealth, will be disappointed to read a blog about Sunflowers.

    1. Sorry, typing on my phone – Anyway, what do you think? Should I change the name to something more generic like RichOnLife or RichOnEverything? Or does it matter? Thanks, D

    2. In all honesty I don’t think it matters too much about having what you write about in your title name. Mine is legit my whole name, and gives nothing away about what I blog about. I guess its down to what you want it to be. If the main focus is health, it doesnt mean your name has to have health in it! Just my opinion though, do whatever you want to and what’s best for you!🤗

  2. I think you’re right

There’s beauty in diversity. It’s really important for a Blog to be kind of diverse and yet specific in its contents.

My Blog, Koinonia.art.blog, started off as a purely Christian Blog. I’m a Christian, I believe in God and I used it as an avenue to tell others about my faith.

But I realized if I’m gonna reach more persons, I must be more creative in my content.

So I added motivational poems, stories etc.

    Today, we’re growing daily.
It’s still not where I want it to be,
But it isn’t where it used to be.

  3. Personally, I think that even if you want to remain in your niche it’s a great idea to be personal or go off topic once in a while. I tried this recently with a mythology post which is a far cry from my usual travel articles and I still got loads of encouraging comments.

    It’s effective to experiment.

  4. I started as a health blogger as I’m a Nurse. But I have other interests too. And there are so many things happening around us that are as important as health. So I took the risk and moved out of my risk. My readers appreciate me for everything I write, and that’s what matters the most to me.
The reading should be worth it. It doesn’t matter what niche, you should be able to justify it and make the reader feel satisfied through the work. That’s what matters.

  5. This is really a question that I ask myself literally everyday. I’ve started my blog just a month ago so I don’t have much experience in this area…but still I look at people…all bloggers…they all focus on a particular niche. And here I am writing articles that are completely unrelated …well..a little bit related…but yeah u get me. I write my blog…well..just for the sake of writing…but people pressurise me to grow it( with inverted commas) and it just doesn’t seem right to me to write in one niche. Good to know that someone does have like thoughts.
    Keep writing.

    1. I think with blogging its each to their own. It’s totally up to the individual whether or not they wish to stay in a niche or not. As I mentioned in this post, I am a lifestyle blogger. But Lifestyle is such a broad statement. My version of lifestyle is completely different to someone else. Its about doing what’s best for you and your blog! If you want to write about things that are unrelated, you do that! 🤗

  6. This is really a good question and as I just started writing blogging might be challenging to answer it. Having said that at the moment I really want to write on and around by niche which is renewable energy. I think that choosing a niche at first might help in finding the topics and the correct words bcoz I want to write on it. But it really comes down to the readers, for whom I will share. If they are willing to reader one’s niche that’s well and good. But as you said that toy earlier started with a niche but didn’t have many viewers might have force you to writing on a broader topic.

  7. I think it’s important not to limit ourselves in anything we do in life. Becoming specialized in anyone topic doesn’t mean we can’t explore and discover other avenues, even if it’s just for ourselves first. And if something really excites us and we discover a passion for something unexpected, when we share, it comes through whatever medium we’re using, and that draws people in. But my blog is wholly unpopular/undiscovered (depending on if you’re a glass half-full/glass half-empty kind of person), so maybe my take is unrealistic and naive?

  8. Hi..thoughtful writeup.. I started writing as writing is my passion..not easy to publish a book..but lots of thoughts, ideas, views on life, on current situations were crowding my head. I found a platform by letting my pen..rather my keyboard do the work of saying what I want to say..hmm..so difficult to zero down on a niche..that’s very restricting I feel.

  9. I’ve always wanted to focus on the legal and law school niche but I completely know the result — less readership. This is because not everyone would be interested with the law or studying the law.

What I did was I allowed myself to test the waters. I wrote several blogs/articles and at the end of a certain period, I reassessed myself. Interestingly, I observed that I usually write about law school, law, and lifestyle. Thus, I decided to rebrand my blog, touching those topics. I still blog about things beyond these two, but I would definitely go back and revolve around them.

You are write about being inclusive. However, it can also be a challenge to establish yourself as an expert in your chose niche. I guess, expanding a bit, without deviating too much from your expertise, would be a great strategy.
