Christmas this year is going to be very different to anything any of us have ever experienced before. In my eyes that means Christmas needs to be an even bigger deal than it already is. We need the excitement and anticipation for Christmas because we haven’t really had anything else to look forward to this year.
That being said, I thought for todays Blogmas post I would share 4 Christmas activities we can do this year that are fun and not too expensive. Most of these things can be done virtually too if you aren’t able to get to your family or friends this Christmas.
WHITE ELEPHANT
Now if you haven’t heard of white elephant before you’re probably very confused right now. I have no idea why its called white elephant but what I do know is that its a super fun game to play! I’ll explain the rules to you and hopefully it starts to make more sense!
- Each player brings on wrapped gift to contribute to a common pool of gifts. Its totally up to you what kind of gifts you want to buy. Some can be fun and joke type gifts and some not. What I would advise to set a spend limit, that way everybody gets the same value of gift. In the past me and my friends have agreed the gift has be at least £10.
- Players draw a number to determine what order they will go in. Another way to do this is to put everybody’s name in a hat and pick the order that way.
- Players then sit together surrounding the gift pile.
- The first player with number 1, or who’s name was drawn first picks a gift from the pool and opens it.
- The following players can choose to pick a new gift from the pool or they can choose to steal a gift previously opened by someone else. If you are a player that has a gift stolen, you then get to pick a new gift or steal one from someone else, but you are not allowed to steal the gift just stolen from you.
A few more rules to consider:
- A present can only be stolen once per turn, which means players who have a gift stolen from them have to wait to get it back.
- After three swaps, the turn automatically comes to an end.
SECRET SANTA
We all know the beloved secret Santa! The staple Christmas gift swapping for work places and offices. If you don’t know the rules here they are:
- All the people who want to participate put their names into a hat or random name generator.
- Be sure to discuss a spend limit before hand.
- Each person takes it in turn to draw a name from the hat. If somehow they choose themselves, they are then to draw again.
- Make sure you don’t tell anybody who’s name you have!
- Buy the gift for the respective person and add their name onto the name tag. You then add it to the gift pile where everybody else’s gifts are.
- Open presents together and spend the rest of the year trying to figure out who got it for you!
NAME THAT CHRISTMAS SONG
Such a great and fun Christmas game to play together in persona or virtually. There are many YouTube videos available to play this, which will save you all of the hard work. Gather some people together (as long as social distance rules in your area allows it), split yourselves in teams or do this individually. Play some Christmas songs and write down the answers. Whoever guesses the most correct wins!
VIRTUAL CHRISTMAS QUIZ
Virtual quizzes are not dead.. yet! Create a virtual Christmas quiz to be hosted on Zoom or any similar video conference platform. There are tonnes of resources out there with plenty of Christmas quiz questions for you to choose from. This idea is such a great way to remain in contact with your loved ones over the Christmas period!
What Christmas activities will you be taking part in this year?
Remember to stay safe but also remember to have fun!
