How to Not Feel Overwhelmed as a New Blogger

I remember like it was yesterday when I was a new blogger, I felt so overwhelmed at everything there is to learn that it made me feel very anxious. I remember seeing so many established bloggers on WordPress, thinking I want to be just like them! And here I am nearly 9 months later and I have finally now just started to find my feet with blogging. I feel like as more of an established blogger now, I really want to help and provide advice to new bloggers or bloggers who just need some help. It can be hard navigating blogging with all the other things going on in life.

I think it’s also important that expectations are set too. I have met and spoken with so many bloggers that join because they just want to make money and get free stuff. It’s great to have goals and ambitions like that, but a lot of work comes before you get to that stage. So, for todays post I thought I’d share some tips on how to stop yourself from feeling overwhelmed as a new blogger.

TAKE YOUR TIME

As mentioned in the intro, one of the best things you can do is take your time. I found myself rushing when I first started blogging because I just wanted to do the best and be the best. But with anything in life, these things take time. You can’t just expect to be popular and get loads of comments and views when you first start. There are the odd occasions where people do this, but its very few and far between.

Take your time as a new blogger and don’t put too much pressure on yourself. Putting that pressure on yourself is one way to make you feel overwhelmed and usually thats why people give up in the first few months. I don’t think people realise how much work blogging is and the various costs that are involved with it. So, relax and take things slow.

Remember, slow and steady wins the race.

SET A SCHEDULE

Schedule, schedule, schedule. Schedules are your best friend when it comes to blogging. One blogging mistake I made when first starting was failing to set myself a schedule. Not only does this schedule hold you accountable, it also helps to balance everything too. You have a clear and set time when you post and it allows you to put time aside for everything else too. Often new bloggers try to do everything at once and it leads to burn outs. So, be sure to set yourself a good schedule and try to keep to it if you can.

A few months ago I released a 30 day blogging plan which is perfect for new bloggers just starting out. It has a 30 day schedule already created for you, and it has days and times and what to do on each day. If you’re interested in purchasing, click below!

GET TO KNOW OTHERS

When writing this post, I kept thinking about the things I remember doing when I felt overwhelmed when I was new to blogging. And one thing that stuck out to me was making blogging friends. I remember some days feeling so unsure about what to do with my blog, and having my friends there helping and supporting me really helped.

One of the most important things you can do as a new blogger is make connections with others. Your blogging friends will become your support system. And those you go to in time of need. Yes, you probably have real life friends you can talk to, but they wont relate to those weird and wonderful blogging problems we all face. Other bloggers are really so important on your blogging journey.

  1. I enjoy the process. Covid allowed me the freedom to work on more since I was home I could manage my real job and blog. Now that I am
Back in the field it is a little harder.

    1. Be active on WordPress reader. If you don’t already, create a blog instagram account and make connections through there! Twitter is also a great platform to make friends too!

  2. Right now I am struggling with a schedule. I just publish a post usually on Monday and Wednesday but there are some weeks I publish on Tuesday and Friday. I feel like if I had a schedule it would be good for my readers. These are great tips.

    1. To be honest, from my experience it made no difference what days I posted. It was more to do with how often I posted. So was it once a week, or twice etc. So maybe focus on that, rather than specific days!

    1. If you feel like its something you can do, then do it. Nobody else can choose for you. Posting everyday can be alot. Breaks are just as important in blogging as regular posting is.

  5. Thanks Olivia, your post was quite timely. I’ve been doing this for about as long as you but I fit in in between other writing pursuits so my goals with it are very different. Still, it can be disappointing when I get very little reaction when I’ve worked so hard on them, and gratifying when I get a great response.

I suppose even you must get times when you think, ‘is anyone going to be interested in what I have to say?’

Thanks for your post, you do a great job,and most importantly it looks like you still enjoy it.

    1. Oh for sure Paul. Every time I write something I always have the audience in mind. It can be really anxiety inducing publishing something and having nobody really respond or enjoy it. But please remember that you do this for you. We don’t need external validation to confirm if we are good writers or not. People will naturally gravitate towards you! Your tribe of people will find you in good time!

But as a new blogger first thing what I do is enjoy the work what I love, making new blogger friends who will actually are support system in my bad days and share each other’s acknowledgement, explore this community.
What you wrote is absolutely right .

  7. I’m not necessarily a new blogger, but this is my first time taking blogging seriously. The COVID stuff forced me to amp up my content writing and paint a better picture for my readers.

Plus, I miss the fresh smell of a new blog post. Double plus, I adore your neat layout!!!

    1. There are many reasons as to why you can feel overwhelmed. I stated a few of these reasons in my post. I personally have felt overwhelmed on many occasions being a new blogger, and have had alot of people agree they have felt the same too. With so many new things to learn and so much to do whilst balancing a full time job.

      1. Feeling of insecurity can damage the creative prompts in people. That is what I was trying to pen.
I agree with some of the points, but not all.
You did give me an insight in to people’s heart. Loved it.

      2. We are all so different and all have such different priorities, especially when it comes to online life and blogging. A person who wants their content to grow and to become a big blogger/influencer will have different priorities to someone who just wants to use their blog as a diary and share the things they do everyday. I can only speak from my own experience, and thats what I always do. You don’t have to agree! Because your experience, I’m sure is different! 🙂

  8. As a new blogger I needed to see this haha. I’ve been feeling a bit burned out lately and even though I know this stuff, I needed the reminder. I think we all have the moments where we ignore our own advice lol

  9. Great article thanks! Scheduling is great advice. I have recently discovered how to schedule my posts on WP and now use Hootsuite to schedule my socials. It takes the pressure off if I can comfortably work a little in advance and build myself a ‘cushion’.
Now I just need some followers! 😉

    1. Having sung the praises of Hootsuite, they have now downgraded their free version so you can only use 2 social networks and schedule 5 posts (it was 3 and 30) so I guess I’ll have to find something else 🙄

  11. Thank you for sharing this. It’s really helpful as a new blogger to know that I’m not alone in feeling so overwhelmed. I definitely struggle with connecting with new people and building those relationships. But I know that’s what I need to focus on the most. And I love what you said about creating a schedule – I’m usually so good at this but didn’t even think to do this! 🙂
