How To Turn Your Bathroom Into a Spa

Your home should be a place for you to relax. Even if your home life is fairly chaotic as a result of kids, pets or work, you still deserve a place in your home to escape to and unwind. Setting up your own home spa could give you this place to get away and relax. Below are a few tips for creating your very own home spa.

This is a contributed post.

CHOOSE THE RIGHT SPACE

Unused basements and garages can make the perfect spaces to convert into a home spa. Alternatively, you could consider building a summer house in your garden and converting this into an outdoor spa. The space doesn’t have to be too big, although it depends very much on what features you want to add to your spa.

If you don’t have any extra space in your home, you could always turn your bathroom into a home spa. A few improvements could be all that’s needed to turn this room into a place of calm and relaxation.

INVEST IN THE RIGHT TUB

When most people think of a spa, they think of a hot tub. There are many different types of hot tubs that you can buy – if you’re thinking of buying one, it’s worth taking the time to shop around and compare styles. Inflatable hot tubs are the cheapest and most popular option, while swim spas are the most expensive option.

If you don’t have space for a hot tub, you could always consider a whirlpool bath tub. These contain jets of water that can provide some hydrotherapy as you bathe. Alternatively, you may be happy with a standard but slightly fancy tub. A slipper tub could be a great option to add into a bathroom to give it a spa-like feel.

TAKE STEPS AGAINST DAMP

Your home spa space needs to be suitably waterproofed as there’s likely to be a lot of condensation. Materials like stone are great for providing a natural feel while being waterproof. When it comes to porous stone surfaces like cement, consider adding a sealant like RIW toughseal. Avoid carpets and take caution with wood (it’s best to use materials like cedar that won’t easily rot or warp).

KEEP IT WARM

Your home spa needs to be kept warm and cosy during the colder winter months. Make sure that the space is heated so that you’re not shivering after getting out of your hot tub.

There are outdoor portable heaters that you can buy to heat up outdoor home spa spaces. When it comes to an indoor home spa, you can rely on central heating or portable electric heaters. It could be worth looking into underfloor heating – this will not only help to keep the space warm but will help spilled water on the food evaporate. It could also be worth converting radiators into heated towel racks so that you have the option of grabbing a warm towel after.

TRY THESE COSY DECOR IDEAS

There are many fun decor ideas that could help to make your home spa space more cosy. One option could be to add some mood lighting. Candles are the most rustic option, however it could be more convenient to use artificial lighting that you can quickly switch on.

To store bath products, scents, towels and sauna oils, consider adding some racks and shelves. You could also consider adding a small trolley to place near the tub that you can select bath products from or simply place a glass of wine. A bath rack is another option – this sits over the tub and could be used to prop your wine on and possibly even some candles.

Using elements of nature will help to keep your home spa space calming. Consider adding a few humidity-loving plants to achieve this. Alternatively, you could make use of natural materials like stone and wood. This could include decorating with wood panels or adding pebbles as decoration.

So that you can listen to music, you could also consider adding some bluetooth speakers. This could be single speaker or a surround sound system.

Have you ever visited a spa? Turning your home into your safe, relaxing space can be so important for your mental health.
