Moving house can be a monumental task. No move is without some hitch, but ideally, you want your big day to go as smoothly as possible. If you want to make sure that this is the case, then you’ll want to avoid some of these common moving mistakes.
This is a contributed post.
NOT DECLUTTERING
Not decluttering is a huge mistake. Decluttering is essential if you want to keep your belongings organised. It’s also vital if you intend on moving to a space that might be smaller, or laid out differently to what you have now. Even if you do happen to move to a bigger space, there’s a high chance you don’t want, or need some of the items you have lying around your home right now. A major blunder is you packing things, only to donate them at a later date. The main reason for this is because you’ll be paying to move things you no longer need.
NOT HAVING ENOUGH PACKING MATERIAL
It’s very easy for you to fill boxes, but at the same time, it can be difficult to calculate just how many boxes you need. Some moving sites have moving box calculators that will help you estimate how many you need for your space. If you know that you are going to be moving in a few months then it is a good idea for you to hold onto the delivery boxes that you have coming to your home, or for you to ask your friends and your neighbors to see if they’d be happy to hold onto theirs for you. You can always buy packaging supplies from a moving company, or an online retailer. This can add up though, depending on how many you need. Start collecting early on, and you may find that you only have to buy a couple when the big day comes along.
PACKING TOO LATE
It’s all too easy to procrastinate if you are going to be moving a few months from now. Moving is a time-consuming task, but ideally, you need to start packing sooner rather than later. Sure, you can get a lot of work done quickly if you delay, but this will only add more stress to your existing busy schedule. If you have far too many things going on then this will stop you from packing properly too. You might also want to consider adding the general expense of packing supplies to your budget right now, as this will add up more than you realize. If you want to buy yourself a bit of time when it comes to packing then don’t be afraid to hire a local self-storage unit.
PACKING TOO EARLY
At the other end of the spectrum, you may find that you pack too early. Sure, the idea of moving to a new area can be exciting, but you also need to make sure that you don’t lose access to the things you have right now. You may find that you need a shirt or even a charging wire. If this is the case then the last thing you need is to unpack everything, especially when you have made such an effort to stay organized.
NOT BOOKING MOVERS
You’ll probably need a moving service to help shift your belongings from A to B. If you feel as though you can get away without hiring one because you have your van then this is great, but at the same time, you do need to remember that professional movers often have their own insurance. This can protect you in the event of any breakages so be mindful of that.
NOT GETTING ENOUGH ESTIMATES
A lot of people make the mistake of not getting enough moving estimates. It is understandable that you will want to go for the first moving company you come across because it’s faster and easier than doing your research. With this in mind, you’ll probably end up paying more if you do. You may also find that you don’t end up with as much coverage if things go wrong, which is the last thing you need. One way for you to work around this would be for you to get a couple of estimates and see what each service can cover you for. Some companies are more experienced when it comes to moving big bulky items, such as pianos, so make sure that you are mindful of this when the time comes for you to get started. This is especially the case if you have a lot of valuable items around the home.
Excellent tips!
Thank you 🙂
And if you book movers or moving help, confirm by calling not just relying upon texts or emails. Our moving help we booked two months in advance canceled three days before our move! Have a backup plan.
Oh wow! That would be so so annoying! I hope you got it all sorted out…
Two friends we hadn’t seen in two years showed up to help us load. Then we unloaded everything ourselves at the new location. I’m still annoyed with U-haul and will NOT use them again.
Fantastic tips Olivia. I agree that packing too late is a disaster. Nice tips overall💯💯
Thanks so much for reading!
Great tips, Olivia.
I am guilty of not decluttering when I moved last time !! Now I see that it was very important before moving. It would have helped me a lot with the storage at new place and getting settle faster.
You and me both! I left everything to last minute and regret it so much!
I’ve moved a couple of times and decluttering is a must for making the move easier and also collecting moving materials. I’ve been guilty of hiring movers way to late and it definitely adds to the stress of moving, so that’s something to organise sooner rather than later.
Thanks for sharing! 🙂
