Its so important to me to make sure that self-care is practiced all year long, but I agree that it should be adapted as the seasons change. The self-care routine we do in summer should be different to the one we do in Winter. For me personally, I find the colder months the hardest on me mentally and physically as I suffer with asthma and Seasonal affective disorder (SAD).
Incorporating self care into everyday life is something I wish I had done sooner in life. It really makes such a big difference to my mental health and my overall wellbeing. I thought I’d share some tips you could add to your Autumn self care and some tips I even use myself over the colder months. I hope they help and you can add new steps to your routine from this post!
CHANGE YOUR MORNING/NIGHT ROUTINE
MORNING
Getting up in the morning and going to work in Summer is a difference experience to getting up and going to work in Autumn. The mornings are colder and alot darker. I find it really hard in the morning to find motivation to get out of my warm bed. Changing your morning routine in Autumn could look giving yourself some extra time in bed, or making yourself a hot drink and getting back into bed to wake up more. Maybe take your morning a little slower, in order to give yourself some time to adjust to the cold and the dark outside. Small things like that can make such a difference to your mornings and make such an impact on your mood and mental health too.
NIGHT
In the Summer I tend to get into bed pretty late, mostly because the sun doesn’t set till late so I want to make the most of the day. For the Autumn I am in bed so much sooner. I really love to spend time when it’s cold outside wrapped up in my blanket watching shows on tv. This really helps me to wind down after a long day. Changing your nighttime routine in Autumn could be that you head to bed earlier in order to conserve as much energy as you can for the next day. Doing this creates such a pocket of peace for me and its something I look forward to doing everyday.
TRY OUT SOME AROMATHERAPY
Essential oils have become such a staple in my life recently. They have helped me so much with pain and my mood. They are so important to have in my own routine because of the benefits they bring to my life. If you haven’t ever tried them please do, they can really make such a difference. On many occasions they have lowered stress levels and made me have a more positive outlook.
During the colder months I tend to diffuse a different variety of blends. I research and see what oils are best for each season and use them accordingly. Some summer scents are just that, for summer. So I tend to make sure that my blends are seasonal, as thats how I have found they work best for me.
DO AN AUTUMN CLEAN
Move over Spring clean, Autumn clean is coming through. There is nothing worse than having a cluttered home when the weather isn’t the best and its cold outside. When the weather is a mess outside, make sure that your home is not messy inside. I have found that having a clean space really helps calm my mind. For some reason in Autumn I always have the urge to re-arrange and re-design my space too, maybe because im seeing alot more of it and staying in my house more often.

I hope this post was helpful and you found some ways to slightly change your self-care routine during Autumn. Did you notice how the changes aren’t major, they’re just small things we can all do to change up our routines according to the time of year.

The time change always makes me more sleepy in the evenings π₯° I love bubble baths before bed to warm me up ππ»
Yes me too! A bubble bath is a must, especially on cold nights π€
Loved reading this! My self care routine always involves enjoying a nice cup of tea when the evenings are colder π
Thats lovely!ππ
Self care is indeed key. Adjusting to the seasons helps a lot. In the colder months, I just want to stay in my warm bed so getting up and stretching helps a lot. Sometimes, my bed calls my name but I have to attend to it at a much later time. I would also say that the kind of curtains one has can help too. Currently I have white curtains so when the sun shines, it is so bold and radiant and I love it but not everyone may like it because it can disturb their sleep. I love essential oils especially peppermint oil. Thank you Olivia for sharing your tips β€οΈ
For me it would be to wake up with enough time to ease into the day with a cup of coffee and a book. No rushing when the alarm goes off.
Yes, I love that too! A nice relaxed start to the morning
Olivia! I love your tips oh my gosh. It is like reading about my own struggles as the seasons change. I really needed to hear that I am not the only one longing for my bed so early in the day. I would love to know what you are watching on lately too.
You are for sure not aloneβΊοΈ! We all go through various changes throughout the year. Do you mean what shows im watching?
De-cluttering and cleaning is always helpful. In our case things become tougher as our homes get a lot of dust.. We regularly need to do dusting especially of things that are darker in color.
At times though, we are not able to catch up.
I think regular sleeping and waking up times play a critical factor as well.
I agree, sleep is needed to relax and unwind and recharge for the next day to come! Without that we are going to be in a bad mood and probably unproductive!
Love this post so much! Thanks for sharing all these great ideas!
You’re so welcome. So glad you enjoyed this! π
