How To Blog When You’ve Hit a Wall

It’s a very common thing to hit a blog wall, and it can happen alot if we aren’t careful. Sometimes we just get to a point where we can’t do it anymore. I’ve felt this over the last few months. I have noticed my motivation and desire to blog has been overshadowed by other things going on in my personal life. Its taken my attention away from blogging and made me feel like putting less effort into my blogs.

This is completely normal. We are human after all. Doing the same thing over and over again can become boring and you can start to feel complacent. It’s like with anything in life really. As a person I really like variety and love starting new things. Novelty can wear off if we aren’t careful and thats the reason why I create such a variety of content on my blog.

I’m admitting this to you so that I’m transparent with you. I want you to know that even though you may see me posting regularly, it doesn’t mean its not hard behind the scenes. Alot of work goes into blogging and not to mention alot of emotion. Blogging comes with so much uncertainty and ups and downs that not alot of people realise. As bloggers we worry about so many things. We worry about whether our audience enjoys our content and whether we will make money from our sites that month. There are real costs we have to consider.

The aim of this post is to share what I do when I’m feeling like I’ve hit a blogging wall, and I want to hear what you do too!

DON’T BLOG AT ALL

when I feel as though I have hit a blogging wall, I just choose to not post at all. For 5 solid months I posted 6-7 times a week. Now that might sound so shocking and it really is, but I don’t see blogging as a chore. I really enjoy everything that comes with running a blog. So posting and creating content on such a regular basis is so fun to me. But recently I’ve had some other things going on, which means that my heart and mind isn’t in blogging 100%. I recognised this and decided to take some time off.

The time off from blogging does my brain good. It allows me to not worry about likes and comments for a few days and lets me focus on creating and doing what I love the most. Taking time off and doing nothing is one of the best things to do for productivity. And I know that sounds so weird, but it really is. You are allowing your mind to shut off and refresh when you take time off. It helps me so much with thinking of post ideas too.

RE-EVALUATE

Even if you don’t feel like you’ve hit a blog wall you should still do this on a regular basis. I am constantly re-evaluating my blogs purpose and what direction I want my site to go in. Sometimes changing something up can do you the world of good for getting the blogging excitement going again. It could be something as simple as changing up your blog theme.

Really think about whether you want to be blogging or if you’re in the right mindset to be blogging too. If you’re not in the right mindset it might be time to take a step back. If you’re mind isn’t in it then your heart probably isn’t either. And both are pretty important for creating good, quality content for your site.

CHANGE UP YOUR SCHEDULE

Maybe you’re overloading yourself, maybe you’ve put too much stuff on your plate. I find that I hit a blog wall when I overload myself and put too much pressure on myself. As soon as too much pressure is there it doesn’t feel fun to me anymore, it becomes like a chore. Changing your schedule is a great way to overcome burnout.

Go easy on yourself and don’t forget that you are in charge of whether or not you post. There is no-one there with a gun to your head forcing you to post when you don’t want to. You only have yourself to blame for overloading your work load.

How do you overcome hitting a blog wall?
What do you do to get a new mindset?

Hitting a blog wall is okay, its how you overcome it and get over it that is important. Be kind to yourself and take your time if you need to. Your blog and audience will be there when you come back!

  1. Hi Olivia, it was interesting to read your post 🙂 I’ve been blogging for 6 or 7 years and I’ve been in that situation several times. My mind and motivation works in peaks you know? my best advice is to write in advance, to have a series of articles scheduled for those hard moments… have a great weekend and cheers from Lisbon 🙂 PedroL

  2. This is me right now. I had so many posts scheduled for days like this so the past few weeks have really just been about getting everything else in my life in order. I told myself that I’d write a few posts today, but went on to schedule a play date for my daughter… I suppose the break thing is really the first response!

    1. What do you get worried about? I think you have to be careful to not let it consume you. it’s easy to get excited because blogging is excited but you need to make sure you take time off too!

      2. I used to think this way. I think the main thing you need to do is be consistent. Nobody will forget about you, but in order to grow your blog you need to be consistent in posting. Whether thats once a week or twice, doesnt matter about the days necessarily but just making sure you get new content out there is important! If you need any help I am always here!

  5. I actually experienced this at the beginning of this year. I couldn’t find the motivation to write and all of my topics felt so boring. I wasn’t sure if I could continue blogging. I think the thing that helped was getting back into a routine. because of the holidays I was out of the blogging routine. Once I started having a schedule again of when I can get some writing down and when to publish by, I was able to overcome the blog wall 🙂

  6. It’s so easy at the moment to hit that wall, because of changes in life. I had an intention and purpose for my blog- which hit a rock bottom with covid….. But now I am using what I am learning in lockdown, so the whole niche has changed.

  7. This is so good. Taking a regular break is so important in helping to prevent burnout.
I’ve hit that wall only once so far, thankfully, to the point where I stopped writing completely. However, I am currently in a season of re-evaluating and making changes that I feel are for the better.

      1. I like to think so. I came up with a structure that didn’t burn me out or stress me out. I’m still learning but I don’t think that’ll ever change, which is perfectly fine.

  8. I don’t really hit blogging walls, so to say. There are time I put off investing time into creating/typing up new posts. But I have bursts of energy and enthusiasm every now and again. But I think I need to structure myself better. My aim right now is to type up as many posts as I can and schedule dates for them accordingly. To stay on top off things, and to look like I am consistently putting out posts. I do experience worry too if my audience will like the variety of posts I do. But remember that blogging is a positive outlet for me. And a great form of communication.

  10. Right now I am in that place and it’s difficult for me to concentrate. Blogging started to feel like a chore to me. I try to follow the step where you said not to anything and take a break for few days. But I end up worrying that I haven’t done anything. I hope to find the right mindset. Overall, your post was really helpful to me.

    1. So glad it was helpful. If blogging feels like a chore to you then find the things that made you first inspired to blog and get back to your roots. Find what it was that inspired you then to inspire you now!

  14. This was a great post…I am new to blogging I have some posts, but I want to expand my content. Lately I have been very big on mental health and politics. I don’t want my posts to be negative, I just want to have a blog that will be interesting and an open dialogue for people to want to visit my page and give feedback. I love reading what others post and it inspires me and I want to be more consistent doing it.
