Having an email list is one of the most important things you need to do if you have a blog. I didn’t realise this when I first started blogging and it wasn’t until a few months ago that I decided to create one. Having an email list means you have a number of people you can directly market to. I know you have your blog for this, but there’s something about emails that make it that little bit more personal.
There is WordPress email list that people can subscribe to, but when I say email list I am referring to a third-party/external email list. An example of external email lists is Mail-chimp which is very popular and also FloDesk, which is what I use. Having this pool of people is really beneficial as a blogger. They are almost like your fan base or a group of your friends. They are there to be contacted and communicated with. So why not utilise it.
In todays new post I will be sharing 3 ways to grow your blog email list, and sharing how having email subscribers are beneficial! Let’s get started.
OFFER INCENTIVES
If I think back to a time where I signed up to an email list, I really only ever did it to get something out of it. Alot of clothing companies ask you to sign up to their newsletter and offer a 10% discount code, and those types of marketing strategies really work. I started to offer a free media kit template if you signed up to my email list and almost instantly gained over 100 subscribers. It’s important that you give your readers a reason for signing up. You need to make it worth their while.
Offering freebies is one of the most effective things you can offer on your blog. Whether its access to special discounts or promises of first dibs on a new product you’re launching. Make sure you are giving your readers an incentive/reward for signing up. You need to remember to advertise that you do this too. Don’t just upload the sign up button to your homepage and assume people will see it. Often you’ll find me advertising to my audience and letting them know the promotions I am doing through my email list. If you’re trying to get people to sign up, then be sure to advertise it first!
PROVIDE EXCLUSIVE CONTENT
Something I do regularly for my email subscribers is provide exclusive content each month. Once a month I send out an email with some extra tips or tricks which haven’t been uploaded onto my social media or blog yet. This could be another incentive for your readers to sign up to your list too!
I have seen other bloggers provide codes to password protected blog pages and used that as a way to entice people into signing up to their email list. The most important thing to getting people to sign up is being creative. Think outside of the box and try to do something that not everyone does.
USE SIGN UP BOXES
If you’ve been on my website recently you’ll see I have several sign up boxes. This is done intentionally as I want people to be reminded to sign up! Pop up sign up boxes are one of the best things you can do. I recently started using FloDesk and it allows you to use pop up sign up boxes on your site. Now if you have no idea what I mean, its when you click onto a website and after a few seconds a sign up box pops up.
I have noticed such a growth in email sub numbers from doing this, so I know for a fact it works. We cant always rely and think that our audience is going to search our whole websites. So that pop up box is a gentle reminder for them.
FLODESK
As I have mentioned a few times already, I use FloDesk to send out my emails and they operate my sign up boxes too. Today I have a link you can use to get 50% off FloDesk for life. Why not give it a trial first? Using my link will also provide you with a 30 day free trial if you want to try before you buy. FloDesk has made my life so much easier when it comes to communicating with my email subscribers. I used mail chimp for a while before finding FloDesk and LOVE FloDesk so much more. So why not give it a try?

Gonna get brave and come back and try this when I have a little more time haha It all seems intimidating in these beginning stages but thank you for this post!
Thank you for sharing. I have been thinking about it a lot but was a bit lost as to what to do. But finally created one with Mailchamp. Still getting a hang of it. Do you have tips for a newbie to email marketing in terms of set up and automation. I would love your take on it. Is Flodesk easier than Mailchamp?
I’ve been wanting to start an email list because I know that it will be helpful. My issue is figuring out exactly what info, tips, etc that I will offer besides what I post on my blog and social media already. Trying to get it together.
Thank you for sharing these tips!!
