What To Do When Your Blog Stats Get Low

If you were to ask any blogger that the main concern they have of their blog, 9 times out of ten they’d reply something to do with there blog stats. And I probably would too. Bloggers worry about anything and everything to do with their blogs. Sometimes we tend to worry too much. As a blogger I know that alot of our ‘success’ comes down to how many followers we have, or how many likes, views and comments our posts get. And when these numbers get low, it’s easy for us to become discouraged.

I have had so many conversations with fellow bloggers about blog stats and how we need to learn to live with the fact they are very random at times. One day I will have awesome traffic, and the next I have hardly any. But with anything, numbers fluctuate. I think what we need to learn as bloggers is that it’s not a reflection on us and our work, if our blog stats are low from time to time. If people don’t read your post one day, it doesn’t mean you failed or that you aren’t good enough. It might just mean it’s a slow day for you. Or your blog posts just don’t perform well on that day.

Because we put our heart and souls into our websites, I know how easy it is to get upset when things don’t go as planned. You can start to feel like a failure. In todays post I want to share some tips of what you can do when you notice your blog stats decreasing!

REMEMBER – DON’T PANIC

It might seem obvious, but remember to not panic. You might not ever know the reason as to why your stats have dropped. But, take it as it is. Maybe there’s a national holiday in some countries and less people are online. Maybe the post just wasn’t to your readers taste (this is okay too!) The worst thing you can do is let it get to you and take it personally. How are you to know what your audience enjoys if all of the feedback is the same? Its actually a good thing to know that some post topics don’t do as well as others. It really helps to give you and idea of what kind of content you should be focusing on.

The best of the best bloggers go through this from time to time. I’m currently facing this at the moment too, but its okay. Because the comeback is always greater than the setback! We all go through the hills and the valleys when it comes to blogging and blog stats. Take each day as they come.

DON’T BE DISCOURAGED

I know so many bloggers (myself included) that let low blog stats get the better of them. I mean, who wouldn’t?! We pour our heart and soul into our websites. We share parts of us not even our friends and families know. And for us to not get the blog stats we had hoped for, can be so discouraging. I have nearly quit blogging from this before. So often I see bloggers quit and leave their sites from having lower blog stats. And I don’t want you to be one of them.

Don’t let numbers define you and who you are. Think about it, its literally just a number on a screen. When you die, nobody will ask what your monthly blog stats were. Put that into perspective. Does it matter?! Not really. Even brands don’t care too much what your stats are. I have worked with brands in the past who didn’t even ask once what my monthly views were. So if other companies don’t care, why should you!

THINK OUTSIDE OF THE BOX

If you’re finding that your blog stats have reduced in the last weeks or months, then do something about it. Maybe it’s time to switch up the content and try something new. Don’t sit and wait around for things to get better, make them get better yourself. You can either decide to wallow in self pity or get off your butt and change. You decide!

If your content hasn’t been well received recently, then try something different. Change isn’t always bad when it comes to blogging. There is nothing wrong with broadening your niche into something different. You might even find you enjoy this new content more too. Remember that you are a creative being – you must be if you have a blog! Channel your creativity into doing something new and fresh on your site.

Perhaps start a blog post series where you talk about various topics. Or invite other bloggers onto your site for an interview or a guest post. There are so many new ideas out there waiting to be discovered.

What do you do when you find your blog stats have gotten lower? Do you pick yourself back up or worry about it?

If you’re the blogger right now reading this, discouraged by the lack of interaction and views. Remember that your purpose is so much more than the numbers you see in front of you. If your content can help even once person, it’s worth it.

  1. When my blog stats are too low on any given day, I just start sharing it to socialmedia again and again throughout the day. It usually brings me a handful of new readers & potential followers (especially on twitter)

  2. Great post. It is so easy to get downhearted when this happens. I guess there needs to be an understanding that this happens on the odd occasion but as you said you can always research the days and the posts that were posted to see if there is a deeper reason for the loss of views.

    Really helpful Olivia 😀

    1. Thanks so much for reading. Sometimes there just isn’t a reason as to why its happened, but I think the important thing is that we take it as it is! And not get caught up in it!

  3. Amazing read. I like the way you’ve put the emotions and feelings behind with regards to attraction towards number. Never giving up attitude always works and makes ourselves more strong from inside. It was a worthy read. Thank you so much for sharing this Olivia!

  4. I think your observations and tips are brilliant Olivia. I recently thought about giving it a break for a while, but it’s like a drug isn’t it? – I just can’t leave it alone. One thing I would like to say though is that, first and foremost, all us bloggers have to do what we do for ourselves, and not just for other people to put a like to it. If I waited for a like, comment or a follower to turn up I would have given up a long time ago. Without labouring the point too much, on the surface it doesn’t look like I get too many accolades, but that’s not the whole picture because there seems to be more interest in following my blogs through Google Search than WordPress Reader.

I hope this makes others realise that blogging comes from within and not just looking for a pat on the back from someone that we don’t even know. That said, I’ve found a some good honest friend as well. Sorry if I’ve hijacked your post somewhat, but hopefully it might help some of your readers.

    1. Yes! I love this comment so much. I think it’s so easy to get sucked into crowd pleasing. And only posting what you know people want. And although there does need to be an aspect of this, its not everything. We have to always remember why we started!

  5. Such good points. “Don’t get discouraged.” That’s the constant battle especially getting started. Realizing we write because it’s who we are is helpful. Thank you Olivia 💕

  6. I try to avoid looking at the stats. Even though I do from time to time. They seem to be fairly stable, but that isn’t always a good thing when you -I- seek growth. I told someone that I would consider some form of monetizing my blog once I reached a certain number of followers, but then didn’t when I realized the difference in the number of followers and the number of interactions. Disappointed? Yes, Quitting? No. Even if no one reads, just as I have to breathe, I have to write and will. Thank you for an insightful post.

    1. It’s important to remember Rebecca that we do this for us, first and foremost. I 100% agree with what you said! It can be disappointing but that doesnt mean we stop!

      1. I’ve done some form of writing ever since I can remember. That first grader who kept writing even though the teacher one day made a big deal in a good way out of it and the next time she failed me for not just writing sentences. Wasn’t my fault the spelling words made sentences that so easily formed a story.

    I laughter about it now.
It still happens now, but I don’t care about it.. as long as I write my heart out, I’m happy.
If anyone shares their feedback, even if it’s just one .. that just makes my day! But what makes me more happy is my desk which never fails to bring a smile on my face! 😄
