As bloggers we are always trying to make our blog better. Whether its changing the theme every few months or re-designing our logos. We are always striving to better our blogs. I am guilty as charged when it comes to this. I’m constantly looking at my website and feeling as though I am never satisfied with how it looks. I guess thats the obsessive and addictive blogger in me!
I am asked often what advice I can give to people to help improve their blogs. And its quite a hard question to answer. Purely because improving your blog consists of doing multiple things. There is no one strategy for improving your blog that fits all. All of our niches are different and our audiences, so the advice for one might be different for another. There are, of course generalised advice that can help majority of bloggers who are looking to improve their sites. So thats what I’m sharing with you today!
A COHESIVE THEME
One of the most important things you can do is to make sure you have a cohesive theme. When someone first clicks on your website what is it that they see first? The layout, colours and navigation. All of these things are just as important as the content you publish. As I have said many times, blogging is probably 20% writing and the rest is keeping up with the maintenance of your site and also the way it looks.
It sounds kinda shallow but people are more likely to trust you and trust what you write if your site looks nice. The same thing works whenever you’re purchasing products online. If the site looks professional and looks as though its legit, you’re more likely to purchase from them. The same thing applies to blogging.

Research is something that is very very important to do. Whether you’re researching about a topic you’re writing about, or whether you are researching blog post ideas. It’s an important thing to consistently do. Research really helps in making sure that information you’re sharing is coming from trusted sources and it can also help to back up the things you decide to write about. The last thing you want to do is share false information to your audience, as this could effect your credibility as a writer.
There are tonnes of websites you can use to conduct your research. Head to Google or any other search engine and start there. Type in any key words relating to your post and see what information you can find! You never know, you might learn something new.

OPTIMISING FOR SEO
If you’re a new blogger and you aren’t sure what SEO is, I really urge you to research it and find out what it is. I failed to do this when I first started and regret it so much. SEO is search engine optimisation. Its the process you go through to optimise your content to ensure it shows up on search engines like Google. Failing to do this can have such an impact on your traffic to your website.

One thing I wanted to make sure I did with this document was to make it user friendly. I explain everything in simple, easy to understand language. Which makes it perfect for beginners.

CATCHY POST TITLES
Think about blogging like you’d think about books. It’s not just the content that draws you into wanting to read a particular book. It’s everything about it, the title, the images used, the author themselves. Theres so many factors that go into you making that decision to pick up the book and read it. And the same goes for blogging.
Everything needs to be in its place, and one of those things are ensuring you have catchy post titles. You want to draw your audience in and encourage them to read your content. And you won’t do that with boring, uninviting post titles.
One of the best things about blogging is having such an amazing community of people around you. And with those people come the opportunity to guest post. Guest posting is when you invite other bloggers or writers to create content for you to publish on your site. And vice versa it’s when you create content and posts for other bloggers too. It’s such a great way to get to know fellow writers and also it helps with back-linking which also helps with SEO.
Always be careful with who you allow to write for your site. I have had instances where people have copied other peoples content online and tried to submit it for a guest post on my website. Always make sure you check work, and if something feels off then there’s no reason you cant back out of the guest post.

LOGO & BRANDING
Something obvious (well to me anyway) that makes your blog better is the look. Its your logo and branding that sets you apart from other bloggers. As much as I know the content is important when it comes to a website, so is the appearance. I would recommend getting yourself a solid logo with set branding too. Which means picking colour schemes and fonts.
This really helps to increase audience awareness. Think about brands such as McDonald’s. You know it’s McDonalds by the logo, and the colours they use. Now I’m not saying you’re anything like McDonald’s but the concept is the exact same!

When I first started blogging I was so confused at how so many bloggers were able to take these wonderful, professional images for all of their posts. I was so impressed by the fact they took so many and were able to make them look so good. Little did I know, was that they were using free stock images. What a fab idea!
Stock images are a bloggers dream and can be used for pretty much anything (providing that the website you get them from gives you the licensing to do so). I use stock images for most of my posts and I really love how they look and make my blog look too.
Always be sure to check if the website gives you full permission to use images in any capacity. This is really important so that you don’t get into trouble!
