There are many philosophies of interior design, and some or all of them may apply to your home. That said, selecting between them can be tough. Feng shui may promise to redirect the positive energies around your room, while design ideals like minimalism or maximalism can help you lean into your biases and aesthetic urges.
This is a contributed post.
That said, simplicity is often key. You need your room to reflect your tastes, but also remain functional and comfortable, a space you can easily think in. Moreover, design is rarely a one-and-done effort, it takes a little while to curate the decorations or functions you wish to see, even if that includes building the perfect reading corner over the span of two weeks.
For those unsure of where to start, we’d like to put forward a simple suggestion – consider the use of focal points to design your interiors well. This can not only help you prioritize furniture and its orientation, but sustains a natural flow to the space that most designers would approve of.
In this post, we’ll discuss how to achieve that:
MEDIA WALLS AND TELEVISIONS
Media walls can help you implement both fireplaces and television mounts, so your space looks well-formatted, and comfort, as well as entertainment, is centralized in an easily-viewable location. Arranging sofas in living spaces, making sure your dining room table is placed in the room where everyone has navigable walking space around it, and placing chest of drawers or televisions at the foot of the bed on a table mount can help centralize how you use the space. Focal points like this allow for comfort, ease of use, and a purpose for the seating positions of the room.
STATEMENT LIGHTING
Statement lighting can help direct the space. Often, bright spaces leading to areas lit with ambient light helps direct the eye, from light to shade, and this can work well if hoping to design lighting for rooms at night. For instance, a nice side lamp that helps illuminate your living space, with a small lamp on a shelf or near the television, can help reduce glare while also avoiding any harsh direct lights that someone seated would struggle with. You can also use lighting in your hallways, lining the walls to add a sense of ambiance.
ARTWORK & GALLERIES
Artwork, or galleries of photographs and family pictures framed and placed around the room or along walls can strike an impressive presence, especially because pictures often use natural color gradients and design elements that work with others in your space. A beautiful hung image above your bedspread, perhaps illuminated by your bedside lamps each night, could offer a fantastic invitation to your most comfortable area in the house. Artwork doesn’t have to be complex, you may even use abstract paintings that offer a similar color profile to those that accentuate other trimmings in your house, but it does showcase a cultured approach towards decoration, and adds that wonderful decorative element you’re looking for.
With this advice, you’re sure to use focal points to design your interiors correctly.
