5 Lessons I’ve Learnt From My Parents

For me, my parents have played such an instrumental part in my life. They have taught me right from wrong, how to cook, clean, be a kind loving woman, how to have respect. I could go on and on. So I thought I’d share some specific lessons that I feel as though my parents have taught me in my 25 years of life and hopefully they can be lessons you can learn from too. This post is going to be a little more personal than any of my others, so I hope you enjoy learning about my family. If you do want to learn more about me, I have a 15 questions to get to know me better post you can go and have a look at here.

HOW TO BE PATIENT

This is still something I’m learning everyday. How to be patient in any circumstance. I always want things right then and there and never want to wait for it. My parents have taught me this over and over again, even in the smallest of things. Just recently I wanted a new computer, and I wanted to buy it straight away. My mom gave some sound advice as to why I should wait, and she was right. I waited and it turned out to work out better because I waited. Being that little bit more patient can help so much with keeping calm and not being stressed. Just going with the flow and trusting the process.

RANDOM ACTS OF KINDNESS

I for sure got this one from my mom. She is always sending random gifts, cards and other things to brighten people’s day. Its the small things she does that make me so proud and happy to be her daughter. She has such a caring heart. I like to think I do too and I got that from her. My love language is definitely gifting. I love sending random cards and gifts to people who are going through a hard time, or if they need a random reminder they are loved.

HOW TO EMBRACE MY CULTURE

I am so proud of my mixed heritage. My dads side of the family are Jamaican and my moms are British and French. I feel so connected to both sides of my blood line. I love learning things about each culture and have had such an upbringing that I was exposed to both on a regular basis too. To me its so important that I know where I come from and who my ancestors were. I encourage you to do the same, find out who you are and where you come from. You might be surprised by what you find!

TO ALWAYS DO THE RIGHT THING

Integrity is something I feel very strongly about. Since I was a child I remember trying to lie and feeling so bad that I’d tell on myself. I just couldn’t do it, the guilt would eat me up inside. I appreciate this quality because I want to feel bad if I do something wrong, I want it to eat me up inside until I put it right. We should all have some level of integrity in our lives, when nobody is watching we should all strive to do the right thing.

IF IT DOESN’T FEEL RIGHT, DON’T DO IT

Listen to your gut feeling. Thats what my parents have taught me. It doesn’t matter what it is, but listen to your gut feeling. If it doesn’t feel right then don’t do it. I feel as though this one is probably one of the most important lessons I have learnt from them because you should trust your instinct. Only you know sometimes if doing something feels right or not. If you feel anxious or worried about a decision then it’s probably not the best thing for you right now, and you should listen to that. They have also taught me how to use my voice, if I don’t want to do something then I shouldn’t do and its okay to say no.

I know that I am lucky in that I grew up with such amazing parents who only look out for me and my best interests. I hope one day I can be a shining example as I go into parenthood and teach my kids the same lessons that they have taught me.

What life lessons have you learnt from parents or people you look up to? How have they shaped you into who you are today? I’d love to hear about them!

  1. Things I’d love for my son to learn from me! Great post Olivia. Your point about embracing culture is super important to me too and I really hope my son grows loving both of his cultural heritage as well.

  2. One thing that my parents taught me which was important was to take on challenges and always look to learn. Yes, in the process you will make mistakes and thats natural, but they would always support me, and having that support makes a difference!

  4. My mother taught me very early on, “what matters is the inside, not how someone looks”. This seems evident and somewhat lackluster but I’ve found that when it comes to dating specially, people don’t shy away from being superficial and never going out with people they don’t find attractive. Never getting to know them. I’m proud to have never limited myself to that criteria. You can find the most amazing mind behind the uggliest forehead.

    1. Its a great mindset to have!! Its about the inside and who they are as a person as well as being attracted to them physically too! Thanks for sharing your thoughts with us!

  5. Olivia such a meaningful, thoughtful and warm hearted post, all at the same time. My parents taught me to have a broad, open and enquiring mind. Dad’s philosophy was work hard, get the job done, then sit back and relax (ie be responsible). Mum’s is: meet as many different people as you can, they are always interesting (ie. never judge a book by its cover).

  6. This is a lovely post Olivia! Very sweet and heartfelt. We do learn so much from our parents and other influences growing up which is why it’s so important they contribute positively to shaping us as people. Something my parents taught me, similar to yours, is to go through life staying connected with family as well as to be your most authentic self.

  7. I think being patient is what we get to learn from our parents/grandparents, because they have seen the other side of life.
‘Kindness’ is one of the many things my mum always used to rave about. You never know what being kind can do to your life and others….

Love, love, love this post 🧡🧡
