5 Signs It’s Time To Take a Blogging Break

There have been many times on my blogging journey that I have felt its time to take a blogging break. And each time I feel it, I do it. If you’re an outsider looking in, you won’t know the ins and outs of what it takes to be a blogger. It’s much more than just writing and uploading. It’s about the admin that comes with it. The promotion on social media, and the building connections with brands and other bloggers. It’s really a full time job, and something I wouldn’t trade for the world. However, like any job you need time off.

There have been times where I have failed to take time off and its had such a negative effect on my blog and my own wellbeing. You can’t keep going and going and expect to not get burnt out. And with this, it’s better to not have to learn the hard way. As you can tell by the title of todays post, I am sharing 5 different signs that it’s time to take a blogging break. These are feelings I have felt myself, so I know for sure they are signs. Maybe experiencing one or two at once is okay and you can probably push through it, but any more I think its time to step back!

BLOGGING FEELS LIKE A CHORE

Have you ever felt like blogging is a chore? You know you need to post but you really don’t want to? I’ve had feelings where blogging feels more like a burden than anything else. And honestly it’s not a nice feeling. It’s horrible when your passion starts to feel like a chore, and it’s something that can be hard to overcome. If blogging starts to feel like a burden, its important that you take a step back and re-think why you started. Your passion should never feel like a burden to you. It’s time to take a blogging break if you feel that way.

YOU’RE UNINSPIRED

Although I think it’s normal to go through phases of being uninspired by blogging, I think it’s also a sign to take some time off. Whenever I have felt uninspired to write, taking time away has really helped me to recoup and figure out the direction I want to take my blog. Taking a step back really helps you to see the bigger picture and what’s important to you too.

Try looking for inspiration from other bloggers (remember its only inspiration and not imitation!) and find that spark again in writing. Switch things up and find a new niche to write about. There are so many things you can do, to re-light that writing fire inside of you.

YOU FEEL FRUSTRATED WITH WRITING

Feelings of frustration from not taking a break from doing something are inevitable. You don’t take time off, then you don’t get to miss the thing you’re doing. I have felt so many times I have so many ideas in my mind, I just cant get them out and onto paper. It’s really the most frustrating thing in the world. Because you want to write, but your brain won’t let you.

And it’s no mistake that this happens. Our brains probably know we need a break, and do whatever they can to prevent you from continuing to work. See, even your subconscious knows you need a break from writing.

WHEN WRITERS BLOCK HITS

I don’t even need to ask if anybody relates to this point, because I know most of you will. Writers block I think was created by the devil himself. Because it truly is evil. Not being able to think of blog ideas and feeling like you’re stuck in a locked room is really the most frustrating thing ever. So I sympathise if you’ve ever experienced it yourself.

I find when I am in the midst of writers block, taking time off is really my only option. Taking a step back and not thinking about blogging really helps me to reset myself again. Whenever I feel this way, I tend to reach out to other bloggers and seek guest posters. Hosting other writers on your blog is such a fab way to get inspiration flowing again.

BLOGGING IS GETTING IN THE WAY OF REAL LIFE

If you are letting blogging get in the way of your real life, then its probably time to take a blogging break. Take time off and live your life for a while. Blogging should always be an addition to your life, it should not become your life. Its probably hard to hear, but your real life world is just as important as what you create and post on your blog. I know many bloggers who let blogging consume their lives. And honestly, it can really take over.

Your blog stats and posting can really take over your mind and thats not good for anybody. I remember it happening to me when I first started blogging. I felt like I was living my life in a big blog bubble. And although I enjoyed it, I slowly realised that your life and blogging should match together.

  1. Fabulous blog Olivia. I am exactly at this point. I wrote a blog last week, then felt utterly un-engaged with it and knew that if I was, anybody reading it would be. I’m trying to fore it and as you rightly say, it’s an addition to life, not life in itself. So I may take your advice and step back a little till it feels like fun again.

    Thanks,

    Paul

    1. Hey Paul!

I think that would be a good idea. Go away and take time to rethink things. Then you’ll probably come back with a different mindset and fire, ready to produce content again.

It happens to the best of us!

  2. I think I have struggled through most of these points but I worry that a break will stunt my growth and I will struggle to get back into it. Do you find it easy to come back to after taking breaks?

    1. I do, but I didn’t when I first started blogging. I think having a schedule or having something exciting to plan and come back to when your break is over is a good idea!

      1. Consistency is important. But if you’re on a break, you’re on a break. Maybe schedule things in your absence, but make sure you get your break from blogging!

  3. Blogging can be such a wonderful distraction & a way to keep busy but I’ve found for me recently it’s time to take a break. Minus a few guest posts here and there, I plan to wait until October to post new content mostly because I have personal things going on that truly & genuinely need their full attention. I realized for my own mental health, I need to know when to step away. Not because I hate it but because I can’t do it all! I’m only human. I am enjoying having time to catch up on reading others blog posts during this time. 😊 And a weight has already been lifted.

    1. I love this. Acknowledging that its not because you don’t like what you do, rather that you know its time to take a step back. I think we often go either 0 or 100 when it comes to blogging. And thats why alot of us get so burnt out!

      Enjoy your break friend!
