How I Gained 2k Blog Followers in 4 Months

Running a blog is hard work, but with hard work comes results. I gained 2k blog followers in 4 months, and today I’m going to share my strategy on how I achieved it. I truly did not expect to gain 2k followers in 4 months, I had no idea this would happen. But I was thinking back to when I came back to blogging in July of this year (2020) and how I would have really appreciated a post like this. As some sort of motivation and guidance.

If you are here because you think I’m going to give you some secret code that gives you those followers overnight, you are looking in the wrong place. This happened from hard work and dedication and nothing more. It wont happen overnight and it didn’t for me. The tips I share are the things I did to make this happen. It’s up to you to put in the hard work to see the results.

CONSISTENCY

I talk often about consistency, but thats because I want to stress how important it is. Having a blogging schedule and sticking to it something that helped me to see my audience grow. I post anywhere from five, six or seven times a week. Thats alot of content. As I said in the intro, its not easy and it wont ever be easy being consistent. I constantly feel like I am writing and scheduling content. I will touch on social media a few points down but you should also be consistent with Social media too. Any platform that you can use to spread awareness for your blog you should use. Utilise it if it’s there.

INTERACTION WITH OTHER BLOGGERS

One of the most important things to do if you are part of the blogging community is interaction. You won’t ever grow if you don’t interact and support others. Alot of you know my blogging story but when I first started in 2015 I was naive to think people would just come to me, but thats not the case. Its a two way street. Yes, you will get traffic to your site from people other than bloggers but you need that blogging community behind you in order for your blog to be successful.

SOCIAL MEDIA

Instagram and Facebook are the two main places where alot of my social media traffic comes from. Pinterest is another social media platform that is great to gain traffic to your blog. Linking into the point I made about consistency, its just as important to be consistent on your social media pages too.

I create and post content on my Instagram anywhere between 1-3 times a day. And in-between that I’m constantly interacting with other peoples content. In 2 months I have gained 500 followers on my Instagram account, and thats all from being consistent and being supportive to other content creators out there.

UPGRADING MY PLAN

About a month into rebranding my blog I decided to upgrade my WordPress plan to a premium plan. This was probably one of the best things I could have done, it gave me access to be able to add ads onto my blog and it gave me access to premium themes. The premium plan is worth it for people who have just started but want to take their blog further.

About a month ago though, I decided to upgrade to the WordPress business plan. This allowed me to take my blogging to the next level. With the business plan it allows you to download and use plug ins, such as Yoast SEO. Which is a tool that tells you how you can improve your posts to help with google ranking. Which in turn helps with traffic and followers.

Its something you should consider, especially if you are wanting to take your blogging more serious and grow your following.

POSTING RELATABLE CONTENT

An important thing to remember when wanting to grow your following is posting relatable content. Do your research and see what’s going on in the world and what people are searching for, and then blog about it. Alot of the time I write about what I’m going through. I wont necessarily say on the post that its from personal experience or something I am struggling with at the time, but thats what I do. There are ideas and inspiration all around us.

Being vulnerable goes a long way with readers. They are able to connect with you on such a deeper level if they know you are being open with them.

BROADENING MY BLOG NICHE

I’ve had many conversations with other bloggers about this, but I think it’s so important that as bloggers we are also flexible in what we write about. I think it’s so great having a blog niche, but don’t be scared to step out of it every once and a while. Don’t stress about writing something different, you don’t know how your readers will receive it unless you just do it.

I was a beauty blogger, and then decided that I wanted to reach a wider audience. And thats exactly what’s happened, I switched up my content and by doing that I wasn’t just focusing on one demographic.

These are just a few things I have done to grow my following. Please remember that these things worked for me. I hope they help you too!

  8. Very good advice, thank you Olivia! You seem to have found the holy grail of blogging techniques. You’ve grown so much over the past few months. I also did a little rebrand a while back and widened my niche, upgraded my plan and the like. My goal was always to create content that would have a wider appeal. I don’t want to write just for teens like myself but a range of people. This is why lifestyle + wellness content is so great- it’s always relevant and applicable!

    1. Thank you so much! I think one of the best things I did was doing just that, re-branding and broadening my niche. As I said in this post, you’re then not just narrowing your audience, you’re making it bigger! And that helps alot!

  29. Great. When we get loyal and honest followers who care to read our posts, that’s a real gift. Otherwise, Social Media seems to be flooded with lame requests of “Visit for visit. Like for like”, which I think defeats the sole purpose of writing. The mindless barter system might get us likes but doesn’t do an iota justice to the write-up. As writers and authors, our predominant goal should be to get honest readers, rather than simply exchanging likes. But this is really good and inspirational.

    1. So very true. I really dislike that follow for follow culture, and it just shows what’s the most important to that person, and thats followers. Yes followers are nice, but wouldnt you rather gain your followers organically? Thats my thoughts. Its all about numbers for some people, but there’s more to it than that!

You know that last point about getting/upgrading to the premium wordpress one, i have always been thinking about that decision and always thought, i would only do if a need arises, but reading your review it seemed totally important suddenly.
