The Power of Fitness: How Exercise Can Help Your Mental Health

FITNESS, TRAINING & WORKING OUT

These three things sometimes seem to intimidate people. People often don’t have the confidence to walk into a gym or take a fitness class, maybe because they’ve never been to a gym before. Remember the gym is more than just a place to pose in-front of a mirror for a Instagram selfie. The gym can be used as an escape from reality, an escape from their crappy job with a boss that doesn’t appreciate them, or even a place to socialise with friends.

MENTAL HEALTH

A person’s mental health is tested all the time, from work, home life and day to day experiences. Not having a way to de-stress and relax can turn you into a fizzy bottle of pop. And what I mean by that is every-time you experience something you get shaken up, the more you get shaken up you’re close to exploding. Finding something to keep you balanced and clear minded is important. The gym and fitness is something that has always helped me keep level headed, the feeling after a good workout makes your crappy day worth it. You feel like a little weight has been lifted off your shoulders, feeling like you’ve accomplished something not only are you looking after your heart and body by working out, but also looking after your mind.

WHAT WORKING OUT DOES FOR ME

If fitness has done anything for me the most I’d say it’s gave me the ability to feel proud of myself. Sometimes the hardest part is dragging myself to the gym but the feeling after killing your work out and walking out that door whilst leaving your rubbish day behind, gives you a feeling I want anyone and everyone to experience.

DON’T LET GYMS SCARE YOU

My advice to anyone not feeling confident when it comes to the gym is to remember that a-lot of gyms offer a free personal training session with most memberships. Take full advantage of that. Someone to stand with you and make you feel more comfortable. Please get rid of the thought that people will stare at you because you’re new, we are all there for the same reason and we all had to start somewhere.

Does the thought of entering a gym scare you? Why do you workout? Does it help your mental health? Let us know your thoughts on this topic!

  3. I used to be so scared of going to gym because a lot of the ‘popular’ and super fit/skinny girls from my high school went to the same gym as me so I always felt judged and intimidated. However, I have learnt that exercise is really good for mental health even though I’m not a fan of exercise. It isn’t so much an escape from reality for me but it does help me subconsciously release tension. Great post I really enjoyed it ☺️❤️❤️

  4. The gyms are unfortunately still closed here in our country. So, I do home workouts but honestly I hate working out these days because the weather here is so hot. Anyways, you listed many great benefit of working out.

  5. I enjoy working out. It’s like Disneyland in my mind when I workout. I feel free, my mind is relaxed, it calms me in a very strange way. When I’m mad I work out, when I’m happy I work out. It’s my go to meditation, strangely.

  6. Participation in regular physical activity can increase our self-esteem and can reduce stress and anxiety. It also plays a role in preventing the development of mental health problems and in improving the quality of life of people experiencing mental health problems.

  7. This is amazing, we love it when customers send us transformation photos… However we love it even more when we realise the huge impact that physical exercise has on somebody’s entire life. Keep moving and keep positive, start off slow and build up at your own pace! Thanks for this post Olivia keep up the fab work!

100% agree. I just got back from the gym after debating whether or not I should…. It’s worth it every time. Once you get out of your head, it makes you wonder why it was ever up for debate!

  9. Profound indeed truly speaking I usually feels like that sometimes I usually feel ashamed of going to the gym what people will say, now that I learned and understand we are all there for the same reason and we all had to start somewhere I will definitely be committed for my mental health.

  10. I trained a client in 2019 who was on anti-depressants, I remember reading their health form and the many drugs they were on. Slowly, over the months we trained, they took on a glow, lost weight and one day told me they didn’t see the point of carrying on taking the drugs anymore. Exercise in action💪
