With everybody starting to decorate for Christmas I thought I’d kick off Blogmas with a post on how to decorate your home for Christmas. I always love seeing other peoples Christmas decor and I always want to know where they get everything from. Decorating for Christmas is probably my favourite part of it all, its the lights, the tinsel and the ornaments. It just makes that time of year so exciting.
I think this year Christmas is even more important because we haven’t had anything else to look forward to. 2020 has had a great impact on our mental health and I think we need Christmas as a welcomed distraction. Which is another reason why I decided to do Blogmas.
GO WITH A COLOUR SCHEME
If you’re anything like me then you like a colour scheme for your Christmas decor. As a child my mom used to just let us throw every colour in the rainbow at our Christmas tree, it looked horrific but we had so much fun doing what we wanted with it. She often tells me its her favourite kind of tree! Now times have changed and we tend to stick with a colour scheme. We have a fake tree that we use every year and tend to stick with the same colour combinations. Our living room is a pale green/cream/brown room, so we tend to stick with golds, reds and browns for our tree.
To me there is nothing more satisfying than colours that just compliment one another!
GATHER CHRISTMAS DECOR INSPIRATION
If you are really stuck in trying to figure out how to decorate your home this Christmas then take to the internet and do some research! Pinterest is the best place to go to find inspiration for anything. I gather my inspiration for a-lot of things from looking at images, this is because I’m such a visual person.
There is always ideas out there waiting to be discovered by you!
DO CHRISTMAS DECOR ON THE FLY
As I mentioned earlier, as kids my mom let me and my siblings go to town on the tree. And I am echoing doing just that! If you prefer to do it that way then do it! Christmas is about having fun and not living by rules. Go crazy and pick a gold tree and decorate it with yellow decorations, who cares!
I know I mentioned how I am, and how I like colour schemes and making sure things match. But in the grand scheme of things, it’s not really important. Its Christmas after all! As long as you had fun doing it, it doesn’t matter what it looks like.
How do you decorate for Christmas? Do you follow a scheme or do you just wing it?
Thanks so much for reading. Can’t wait to hear about how you decorate over the holiday season!

My parents are like yours and just chuck everything at the tree but I can see why they love it <3
It's going to be my first Christmas in my house this year, and as I don't have many decorations yet, I'm trying to be more sustainable and make my own.
I can’t wait to decorate at my first home too! Having all of that control over what decorations go where! What a luxury! 🤣
Ha ha. I have a blog post coming up this month about my favourite Christmas ornaments. Spoiler alert – our tree isn’t one of those beautifully colour-coordinated tress that you see in the magazines. You’ll have to wait for my post to find out more! LOL 😂
OOOO I am excited to see this! What day is it going up on your blog??
It’s going up on December 11.
Awesome! I’ll look forward to reading it!
Great tips! I decorate based on the color of my ornaments. This way everything flows together. Haha
Yess! Thats the best way to do it in my opinion 🤣 Can’t fail!
My tree is a combination of handmade ornaments from my kids, ornaments from my childhood as well as my husbands, and then ornaments we get from our family ornament exchange every year. Decorating our tree is so much fun because as we are putting up the ornaments we can reminisce and tell stories about where they came from. I have a picture of my tree at the bottom of my post that I published today.
That being said, I’m pretty sure I’ve never come across a Christmas tree that I haven’t liked! Each one seems to fit the personality of the house that is in.😁🎄
I love that! Its like a opening a memory box isn’t it! You’re right, I don’t think I have either. Each Christmas tree is so personal to each home and family, and thats one reason why I love decorating so much. Its familiar and comforting! 🤗Going to go check out your tree!
I’m torn between letting my two-year old pick the colours and making it match my decor! I think your childhood story has nudged me in that direction 😅
Yes! Let her do it 🤣 i remember it being so fun!
Apart from a few special ornaments, our entire tree is decorated in Star Wars from top to bottom.
Wow! That is epic!!
Great post 😊 I’d love some tips for decorating on a budget!
My family and I did the traditional red, good and green for Christmas. However, pink is my favorite color and for the past 14 years we’ve used pink along with gold, chocolate and silver. A couple of years ago, I got rid of all of my green trees and replaced them with white. I keep adding to my decor little by little, but pretty much stay with the same color scheme. 🎄
