It is What It is

Do you ever find yourself in situations saying it is what it is? I find myself saying this when I get let down or if plans don’t play out like I thought they would. I mean the whole of 2020 was a big it is what it is wasn’t it? Because of the year we had in 2020 I think we all have this mentality now to some extent. We all had plans that year to do great things and see family and make memories and instead it brought loss, death, heartbreak and isolation. And it really reminded me that we really aren’t in control of our lives. We can control our now but not so much our future.

It is what it is, is really a mentality I am thankful for. It helps in heartbreak, disappointment and when things don’t go our way. It’s allowing us to accept the situations we are in.

Today I wanted to talk about this saying and about how having this mentality has really changed my outlook on many things in life.

DON’T GET YOUR HOPES UP

It’s kind of sad but I don’t really get my hopes up for things anymore. There comes a point where you expect bad things to happen because you are so used to other things getting in the way of the good stuff. Having this mentality has really allowed me to not get my hopes up and become content with whatever outcome. When you get knocked back so many times after being excited for something, it can deflate you. It can make you expect the worst rather than hoping for the best.

Alot of the issue in present time is that as people we are expectant and almost feel entitled for great things. We fail to realise that bad things happen all the time, and we are not entitled to anything. As much as we hope and expect things to go our way, we have to be aware that we don’t set our path in life. Its already been paved for us. [This is what I believe anyway!]

TAKE THE TRIALS AS THEY COME

The ‘is what it is’ mentality has come from trials I have faced in life. I think alot of us are not prepared for what happens in life because we always expect things to be perfect, but from experience we all know thats not the case. Trials will come and we should take them as they come. If we are more prepared for them, we are then better equipped at handling them.

Something I have learnt during this pandemic is to expect the unexpected. And realise that things happen in life but it’s how we handle them that really matters.

Do you have any mottos in life that help you get through?
Do you ever find yourself saying It is what it is?

I’d really love to hear your thoughts on this and how you handle things that come your way!

  1. I’m loving your posts lately. I can relate to lots of them and I’ve found myself saying, it is what it is, a lot. It’s good to accept things and we can move on quicker. It’s good to accept we can’t change or control some things so have to let it go, for our own sake. Thanks for sharing!

    1. I’m so glad to hear this Linz. I really strive to make my site relatable to everyone, so knowing this has really brightened my day.

You’re so right. 2020 has taught us that we don’t have any control over what happens in life. And that we have to sometimes say “it is what it is” and move on!

  2. Oh yeah, I’ve said my fair share of It is what it is’! 😋 I think it helps me stay calm and accept a situation that’s out of my control.
Another motto I believe in is ‘One day at a time’

    1. Yes, one day at a time🙌🏽Whenever I am going through something I try to focus on going hour by hour —otherwise everything becomes overwhelming.

I can relate to this post so much. Having “It is what it is” mentality helps to acknowledge the situation in front of us quickly, rather than delaying the inevitable.
      Thank you sharing Olivia✨ xx

  3. Beautiful piece. What I live by is “the race is not for the swift but for those who can endure to the end”. And when I think about that, I say to myself that I’m strong. I’ve been through so my hardships in my lifetime and they all remind me how strong I am.

Traumatic experiences led me to developing PTSD, it was rough but with the right persons by my side and me asking myself what is my purpose on earth, I dig deep to take myself out of that abyss and just keep moving.

  6. This way of thinking definitely keeps things in perspective and can help shift our mindset to living in the moment with gratitude instead of being overly concerned/anxious over things outside of our control. Thanks for sharing!

  7. The only reason that keeps me going is that I can’t just end my life. To be honest, I was never a hopeful person even before this Covid. I had a lot of sorrows. My oversensitivity never let me to find any motto for myself. I am just waiting for this life to get over.

  10. I also find myself saying “It is what it is” at times. I also use “be strict with myself, but lenient with others” or “I can’t always control what happens____, but only how I respond.”

  11. I got to a truly hopeless state from 2018 till the middle of last year. Like Alecia Hall I was traumatized and also developed ptsd in 2019. I lived with the source of my anxiety. Before this problem developed in me whenever I would suffer disappointment, again and again, from this person, I would say to myself not to care, that it doesn’t matter. I shut off my feelings, because it was better than hurting. All of 2019 I had to watch in silence as this person talked about wanting to kill himself. He would have rage attacks and was violent. I finally couldn’t take it anymore and told him he needed help. When I tried this before I was accused of being selfish. When I finally started seeing a counselor I discovered that I couldn’t access my own feelings. I’m not 100٪, but I’m no longer the walking dead or wanting to die.

I agree that we can’t control things, however there should be balance so we don’t lose ourselves.

    1. I am really sorry to hear all of this and thank you so much for being willing and vulnerable to share this story with us. I have been through something similar a few years ago and it is really hard to be around people like that. And its just a matter of time until it starts to affect you mentally too. I really hope you find the strength to heal from the trauma that happened. Sending you positive vibes and prayers!

  12. This is very true for the time being. We really don’t have a lot of control over anything at the moment. I’ve defintley used “it is what it is” in the past but seeing as this is now the third Lockdown in the UK, I’ve got to the point where I need to allow myself some sort of, “stay positive” attitude otherwise I think I’d be in a dangerous place.
